WHAT IS
TMJ Disorder
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull, one on each side of your face. TMJ disorder (TMD) refers to problems with that joint and the muscles around it that control chewing and jaw movement.
TMJ disorder can develop for several reasons, including:
Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism) - often happening unconsciously during sleep
Jaw misalignment - an uneven bite that puts extra strain on the joint
Stress - which tends to show up as jaw tension without you realizing it
Arthritis or joint injury - wear and tear or trauma to the joint itself

Jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, facial soreness, ear discomfort, and difficulty opening or closing your mouth can all be signs of a TMJ disorder. Because these symptoms can have different causes, an evaluation can help determine what’s contributing to your discomfort and whether TMJ treatment may be right for you.

Coverage for TMJ treatment varies depending on your insurance plan and the type of treatment recommended. We bill Medicare and most major insurance plans and can help verify your coverage and benefits before treatment. Contact our office and our team will be happy to assist you.

Yes. TMJ disorders and sleep-related breathing problems can sometimes occur together, and treatment should consider both your jaw health and your breathing during sleep. Dr. Darabi can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether a custom oral appliance or other treatment approach may help address your individual needs.
